Georginio Wijnaldum is set to miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after breaking his leg during a training session with AS Roma.

Wijnaldum joined Roma from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

The 31-year-old suffered a broken tibia after a tough challenge in a training session didn’t go well.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport report, the player Wijnaldum allegedly collided with was Felix Afena-Gyan, who was upset following the crash. Roma are currently ruling out surgery for the Dutchman and his leg was placed in a cast this morning ahead of further assessments.

The club could be forced to agree to surgery for Wijnaldum but either way, he’s not expected to return to the pitch until 2023, which means he’s likely to miss the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

The Friedkins have lined up further consolation with specialists as they work to determine the best course of action.
