Two first-half Netherlands goals earned them a 2-0 victory over Nigeria’s Falconets in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2022 in Costa Rica on Sunday. Completesports.com reports.
This is the Netherlands’ first-ever appearance in the semi-finals of the U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The last time the Falconets made it to the semi-finals was in the 2014 edition in Canada.
Victory against the Falconets means the Netherlands will face Spain in the semi-finals.
The Falconets led the first half of the game and cried for a penalty nine minutes after Flourish Sabastine was knocked down inside the box, but the referee waved on.
But it was the Netherlands who took the lead in the 12th minute through Zera Hilswit who flew into the top corner after a poor clearance from Falconets skipper Blessing Demehin.
Two minutes after the opener, Mercy Idoko came close to a header well managed by the Dutch goalkeeper.
In the 16th minute, Sabastine exploded on the left flank and fired a nice shot that the goalkeeper pushed back for a corner.
The Falconets continued forward and almost equalized on 32 minutes, but Deborah Abiodun’s long-range effort hit the crossbar while Okuwchukwu’s follow-up was deflected for a corner.

But in the 33rd minute, it was the Netherlands who doubled their lead this time under the boot of
Ziva Henry following another bad clearance for. Demehin.
The Falconets came out more determined in the second half and created chances after chances but were let down by a poor finish.
Nine minutes into the second half, Abiodun attempted a long-range effort which was saved well by the keeper.
In the 61st minute, Abiodun managed a header but her attempt was well managed by the opposing goalkeeper.
The Falconets went close in the 65th minute as Sabastine made a superb run into the box, but her weak effort couldn’t hurt the Dutch keeper.
Three minutes from the end, Rofiat Imuran sent a delicious swinger but the Falconets player was there to capitalize.
In the 93rd minute, the Falconets were awarded a penalty for the handball, but after a VAR review the decision was overturned.
